317 Drop-In Jams

The Jam is a time-honored tradition in which musicians gather as a community to make music together. At 317 Main we offer faculty-led acoustic jams that are open to all instruments and all levels of play. No egos allowed — you will be comfortable, supported and engaged by the 317 Main jam community.

These open community are offered on a drop-in basis — just show up with your instrument and your $5.00 fee, and get ready to experience the joy of improvised play. Times, offerings, and locations fluctuate semester to semester. Jams do not meet during the months of July and August.

English Country Dance

A living tradition, English Country Dance has for centuries served as a means of community interaction, exercise for the body and mind, and practice of the social graces. Related to New England contra dancing and Scottish country dancing, but generally less physically demanding, ECD is a great way to make friends, challenge short- and long-term memory, and keep those muscles and joints moving. Repertoire ranges from the elegant to the playful, and from 1651 to the present. Class taught by dancing master Robb Spivey. Best of all, you will find yourself transported by live music from our talented house band. English Country Dance is offered on Thursdays as a class during each session. Maine Folk and Dance Series

In 2021, we began our Maine Folk Music and Dance Video Series. These Zoom events were approximately an hour long and included a premiere of the video and an exclusive Q&A session with the artist(s). We welcomed Grace Kapinga, Bennett Konesni, Don and Cindy Roy, and David Sanipass who discussed a range of topics from maritime work songs to Congolese dance and drumming.

This series was made possible with support from Bennett Konesni, Don and Cindy Roy, David Sanipass and Grace Kapinga. Funded in part by a grant from the Maine Bicentennial Commission. It was generously supported by our friends at Original Maine and TSD Environomics, Inc.
