Sarah Tuttle

Teaches: Voice

Sarah Tuttle enjoys a multifaceted career as a performer, voice teacher, and public radio host.

From Wagner roles to modern opera, chamber music to art song, Sarah’s performances have been praised for their "fine balance of energy and introspection." (The Wall Street Journal). Sarah has a special interest in contemporary vocal music and collaboration with composers, and she’s delighted to have participated in the creation of new works. Most recently, Sarah launched Songs From Here, a Maine-based initiative dedicated to commissioning new vocal works from Maine’s composers, and to connecting Maine audiences with art song through performances and residency programs. Offstage, Sarah shares her knowledge and passion for music over the air on Maine Public Classical, where she shares music and stories with listeners all over Maine and beyond. She also curates and hosts Songbook, a weekly vocal program with an emphasis on art song.

Sarah believes in cultivating a safe and compassionate atmosphere in her lessons, where students of all ages and abilities are encouraged to explore, ask questions, and take risks. In addition to technical voice work, Sarah offers dramatic coaching, diction/text translation tutoring, audition prep, and musicianship training, all of which cooperate to develop a curious, confident, and well-rounded singer. Whether the ultimate goal is a degree in music, feeling prepared for a role or audition, or simply exploring what a voice can do, Sarah brings the same level of attention and care to every student.

Sarah has several years of experience teaching in solo and group settings, both in the United States and abroad. She has served as an adjudicator at the NATS Maine Classical Voice Festival, Bay Chamber Concerts Young Stars of Maine Competition, and the University of Southern Maine Concerto Competition. She has taught masterclasses at the collegiate level, and in 2022 offered her first Songs From Here residency with Waterville Public School student songwriters, performers, and poets through Greene Block + Studios at Colby College. She is the District Membership Director for the Maine Chapter of NATS.

Sarah holds a Masters degree from the Bard Graduate Vocal Arts Program at Bard College, and a Bachelors degree from the Sunderman Conservatory of Music at Gettysburg College. She is proud to have spent two summers as a Vocal Fellow with the Tanglewood Music Center, from whom she received the Grace B. Jackson Prize for Excellence. She makes her home in Portland, Maine.
