317 Main Presents: Jawahir Arabic Music Ensemble

🎶 Join us for an engaging evening with the Jawahir Arabic Music Ensemble! 🎶

Jawahir Arabic Music Ensemble performs classical and popular Arabic and Ottoman music of the 17thto the 21st centuries. The group features Maria Wagner on nay, Duncan Hardy on qanun, Madeleine Hannaon voice and oud, and Dorothy Barker on riqq, darbuka and duff. Jawahir means ‘jewels’ in Arabic and the group endeavors to uncover and share some of the rich variety of musical traditions from the Middle East, both past and present.

This evening’s concert will offer a broad selection of Arabic instrumental and vocal music ranging from classical melodies to contemporary popular songs. The first half will feature both Turkish and Arabic instrumental works and several Muwashshahat or songs from the Arab-Andalusian tradition. The second half of the program will highlight pieces by 20th century Egyptian composers Mohammed ‘Abd al Wahab and Sayyed Darwish and also include songs written by composers Philimone Wehbe and the Rahbani Brothers for the great Lebanese singer Fairuz.

317 Main Presents: Darrell Scott

🎶 Come join us at 317 Main for an amazing night with Darrell Scott!

Multi-instrumentalist and singer-songwriter Darrell Scott mines and cultivates the everyday moment, taking the rote, menial, mundane, and allowing it to be surreal, ever poignant, and candidly honest, lilting, blooming, and resonating. The words he fosters allow us to make sense of the world, what is at stake here, and our place in it. And ultimately, Darrell knows the sole truth of life is that love is all that matters, that we don’t always get it right, but that’s the instinctive and requisite circuitous allure of things, why we forever chase it, and why it is held sacred.

Darrell Scott comes from a musical family with a father who had him smitten with guitars by the age of 4, alongside a brother who played Jerry Reed style as well. From there, things only ramped up with literature and poetry endeavors while a student at Tufts University, along with playing his way through life. This would never change.

After recently touring with Robert Plant and the Zac Brown Band (2 years with each), and producing albums for Malcolm Holcombe and Guy Clark and being named “Songwriter of the Year” for both ASCAP and NSAI, these days find him roaming his Tennessee wilderness acreage hiking along the small river, creating delicious meals with food raised on his property and playing music. He often leads songwriting workshops to help people tell their own truths with their stories, and is as busy as always writing, producing, performing, and just plain fully immersing himself in life.

Founded nearly two decades ago with the simple desire to play original and powerful bluegrass, this quartet now finds themselves at the intersection of performance, diplomacy and education.

Onstage, the group's enthralling performances give audiences a sense of how much they love what they do. On record – including their latest offering, 2023’s Lead and Iron, released via Dark Shadow Recording – the band explores their collective life experiences through songwriting and intricate instrumentation. While bluegrass is the undeniable foundation of the Prowlers’ music, the band bends and squeezes the traditional form into a keenly developed sound all their own.

The Prowlers have now been to more than 25 countries across the globe, working with the U.S. State Department and under their own nonprofit, Bluegrass Ambassadors, and incorporating music from Africa, Asia, the Middle East & more into their already robust repertoire of unique traditional American music.

On stage, in workshops and wherever they are, the Henhouse Prowlers find and spread the commonality we share as human beings through the universal language of music.

An Evening of Storytelling and Art with David Lone Bear Sanipass

317 Main is thrilled to host Mi’kmaq Native American Artist, David Lone Bear Sanipass, in the gallery for an evening of storytelling and art.

Artist Bio:

David Lone Bear Sanipass is an artist and storyteller from the Mi’kmaq Nation. His early years were spent traveling between Elsipogtog First Nation and Maine following the harvests. David’s parents survived the Canadian Indian Residential Schools. David is a survivor of the Sixties Scoop. His family settled at the base of a mountain in Northern Maine. For over forty years, David has traveled across the United States and Canada sharing ancient stories and teachings from his heritage. He was asked by his elders to share these stories not only with his own nation, but all people of all nations of the world. David is a Southwestern Association for Indian Arts juried artist in painting, photography, and jewelry. He has been painting for most of his life, creating his own style while recovering from a brain aneurysm in the late 90s. His favorite subjects include his family and his culture. He also designs and fabricates custom jewelry worn by people around the world. David is currently designing a proposal for a monument and park to be located in the city of Moncton, New Brunswick to honor the Mi’kmaq and Indigenous Nations of the region. He has been commissioned to create public art that accurately depicts the local native people and history in several locations in Maine. His extensive and ongoing research in history, his studies in the arts and traditions, and his work as a structural engineer, give him a unique perspective and ability to share with diverse communities around the world.

Yoga and Live Music

Join Robbie and Taylor for a monthly yoga class accompanied by live music. Classes are accessible to all ages and levels of practice. Kids must be accompanied by an adult. Taylor has been teaching yoga for over 6 years in the Portland area. Her classes weave intention and movement together, creating space for reflection and surrender. Robbie is a multi-instrumentalist and board-certified music therapist in Maine. He believes that music can be a powerful tool for healing and connection. Together, you can expect a class that will leave you grounded and restored. Stay tuned for the theme for each month and join us for a truly magical class.
